Dear Data

Dear Data, is a personal data drawing inspired by Dear Data, the postcard-based project by information designers Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec, where hand-drawn visualizations are paired with a clear legend on the back to teach the reader how to decode the data. (dear-data.com)

During the peak of the war in Palestine, I used the assignment to structure what felt overwhelming and impossible to track in real time. Across one week, I recorded three categories: how much information I encountered, whether I engaged with it or skipped it, and how I felt when it appeared. I translated the week into a hand-drawn postcard and a key that maps each variable through color, repetition, and placement so the viewer can read it consistently.

I then converted the same system into a physical piece using Palestinian cross-stitch language and traditional geometric forms. The stitched work uses the exact same legend and encoding rules as the drawing, so thread color and pattern density carry the same meanings across both formats, turning the postcard data into a tactile, culturally rooted visualization.
